The countdown is on for the 12 May 2025 midterm elections — 66 senatorial candidates and 160 party-list groups will compete for 12 Senate seats and 64 party-list representative positions.

But it’s not just about the national stage. The elections will also decide the fate of 254 House of Representatives seats, 82 governorships, and countless local posts, including mayors, vice mayors, and Sanggunian members at various levels. Voters in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) will choose parliamentary and party members, underscoring the election’s scope and significance.

Key moments


The journey to the polls has already seen its share of drama and intrigue. On 12 January, veteran politician Luis "Manong Chavit" Singson withdrew from the senatorial race, citing health concerns. Despite stepping back, Singson declared the campaign a personal victory.

"I don't have to win because I am already a winner in connecting with Filipinos from all over the country," he said, reflecting on the impact of his advocacy work. His decision leaves a notable gap in the senatorial lineup but highlights the emotional and personal stakes of this election season.

Just days later, on 14 January, the Supreme Court issued six temporary restraining orders (TROs) that threw a wrench into the Commission on Elections' (Comelec) plans. The TROs halted rulings disqualifying or rejecting the candidacies of five individuals and forced a pause in ballot printing, including the disposal of six million pre-printed ballots.

Comelec has reassured the public that it remains on top of the situation. Spokesperson Rex Laudiangco promised that ballot reprinting will resume “at the soonest possible time.”


Ensuring peace and order


As the campaign season intensifies, Comelec is doubling down on peace and security efforts. Chairperson George Garcia has reminded the public to cooperate with authorities at election checkpoints, which will adhere to a “plain view” policy to ensure transparency. These measures aim to maintain order in what is shaping up to be one of the most hotly contested elections in recent years.

With every position, from Senate seats to local governance, up for grabs, the stakes couldn’t be higher. The 2025 elections are more than just a democratic exercise — they’re a litmus test for the nation’s future. Whether at the national or local level, this is a race that no Filipino can afford to ignore.
